Known for her varied collaborations with the likes of Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens, Aldous Harding and many others, Joan Wasser, aka Joan As Police Woman, plays for us here with her band. She will perform highlights from her remarkable songbook stretching right back to her classic debut (Real Life, 2006). For these concerts Joan strips back her original music to its very essence using her voice, piano and guitar, and as always when Joan sings straight from her heart, people listen, intently.
On being a musician, Joan said, “Music has saved my life. It’s not something I can even choose or not choose, it’s just what it is.”
METRO – Music so good it ought to be illegal – ☆☆☆☆☆
RECORD COLLECTOR – Preposterously great music – ☆☆☆☆☆
MOJO – Evoking both the agonised grain of Nina Simone and the vulnerable gloss of Dusty Springfield, Wasser’s vocal is attuned to this suite of noirish groove and brooding, understated torch songs – ☆☆☆☆
THE OBSERVER – The Solution Is Restless is an album that worms its way under your skin, reminding you of half a dozen records you love while sounding unlike anything else around
THE TIMES – Tricky polyrhythms and melodious rhapsodies… Wasser’s levitating voice, and linking it all is Allen’s playing, running through every track like a glittering stream – ☆☆☆☆
VOGUE – Album of the Week
Sunday Times – ‘Sensational’ // Uncut – ‘This is breathtakingly good music‘ // Mojo – ‘full of meditative beauty…ravishing and lovelorn’ // The Guardian -‘a voice so wondrous and moving that it makes everyone else’s seem ordinary and mundane’ // Q – ‘Beautiful’ // The Times – ‘The coolest woman in pop’ // The Economist – ‘Joan As Police Woman is one of the 21st century’s best musicians’ //
‘Joan As Police Woman is of the most charismatic singer-songwriters of her generation ‘ The Times
