Welcome to a brand new season at Exeter Phoenix! 

We are delighted to share our Sep-Dec 2018 season with you, jam packed full of exciting events and activity. 

Visual Art

If you have visited Exeter Phoenix this summer, you will have noticed that our building has been undergoing some major refurbishment works. Phoenix Gallery reopens with a solo exhibition from the internationally renowned artist Tania Kovats, who is best known for producing sculptures, large-scale installations and temporal works.

We would love you to join us at the Phoenix Gallery Reopening on Sat 22 Sep, offering a first look around our brand new gallery spaces and foyer, and hear from artist Tania Kovats about her latest exhibition, focusing on the sea and river systems.

Live Music

Our new season of music is packed full of delights for music lovers spanning all genres. 

Lo0king for the best party in town? Our legendary NYE party will have a Back To The Future inspired twist, featuring an appearance from Dizney Rascal. Don’t miss out on early bird tickets.

With a Mercury Prize nomination under his belt, Nick Mulvey brings his new album here on Sat 29 Sep. Reggae fans won’t want to miss a special appearance from Macka B & The Roots Ragga Band in October, whilst folk fans have the chance to catch BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer Of The Year 2018 Karine Polwart later in the month. For fans of up-and-coming indie, don’t miss BBC Introducing favourites Oddity Road or the Radio 1 playlisted Cassia

Theatre, Dance & Comedy

Thanks to the recent addition of our new Workshop space, we’re excited to present our biggest season of theatre, dance and comedy to date. 

We’re particularly thrilled to be teaming up with Camden People’s Theatre to present Bullish – a brand new play from the creators of Fringe First-winning Joan. 

This Christmas, Quirk Theatre present Puffin Island – an intriguing and exciting new show for all the family. If you have seen Quirk Theatre’s christmas productions before, we look forward to welcoming you back. If you’ve yet to catch one of their shows, we look forward to introducing your family to what we are sure will become a new Christmas tradition! 

We’re delighted to welcome Theatre Alibi back with their new production Table Mates, which sees the company combine vivid storytelling, live music and a good old boogie to bring a funny and creative story to life. 

And there’s no shortage of laughs this autumn, with Zoe Lyons, Paul Foot, John Hegley and Graham Fellows all taking to our stage.

Film 

This autumn, Studio 74 – the home of independent cinema in Exeter – plays host to the latest releases, eye-opening documentary and international films. Particular highlights include Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman which tells the unbelievable true story of an African American detective who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, becoming head of his local chapter, whilst Under The Tree is the latest black comedy from the producer of Icelandic hit film Rams.

Our celebrated Two Short Nights Film Festival returns in November with a jam-packed programme of screenings and events to celebrate the wonderful world of short film. So whether you make film or love film, join us for all the latest must-see short films and special events with film industry professionals.

Creative Hub 

Are you an artist, a filmmaker, a musician, a theatremaker, or anything in between? Discover the Creative Hub today! We’d love to see you at a Creative Hub Social – in fact, we’ll even provide the drinks!  

Looking for a creative space to meet other artists and creatives to explore ideas around meeting, making and the exchanging of skills? Our Social [practice] series offer the chance to engage in collaborative projects hosted by creative practitioners.

Working on a new performance or production? Test out your work-in-progress in front of a supportive and friendly audience at one of our monthly Scratch That! nights. 

Are you aged 16-19 and interested in film programming? We are excited to be partnering with Into Film to deliver a (free!) Young Programmers Day where participants will choose a selection of short films to create a programme that will premiere at our Two Short Nights Film Festival in November 2018.

Courses

We continue to offer a broad range of courses and creative workshops for you to sink your creative teeth into. New courses this season include a Fabric Printing workshop, Beginners Oil Painting, and Photobook Creation

We also have a wide selection of courses for young people with a creative streak. Join us to Star In Your Own Superhero Movie, join the slime craze with our Beginners Slime Making workshop, create a beautiful concertina photo album in our Marbling and Bookmaking session, or become a zombie for a day with our Zombie Special Effects course.
