In 1905 in rural Devon, a cruel and lonely marriage to Lord Bartlett becomes too much for Helen to bear. Leaving her husband’s ancestral home she treks across Dartmoor pushing her sick and ageing father on a cart.
Taking refuge in a deserted barn she is discovered by Lord Shalborne, who offers her temporary shelter on his estate. All intentions of escape are put on hold as Helen and Shalborne allow a connection to flourish between them, but when Shalborne unwittingly mortgages his estate to invest in one of Bartlett’s corrupt investments, Helen becomes a pawn in a gentleman’s game and Shalborne must betray Helen to save his family home. Risking everything to change her circumstances, Helen finds that courage may not be enough to challenge the patriarchal ideals of her time.
