Come and share your stories of joy or pain when things don’t go as you anticipated and how we sail on through difficult times. Playback Theatre performances are moving and magical, comic and courageous and always surprising!
Playback Theatre is a facilitated, creative, and interactive encounter between audience members and actors which stimulates a powerfully creative conversation for everyone in the room.
Someone tells a story or relates a moment from their lives, chooses actors to play different roles, then watches as their story is immediately recreated and given artistic shape and meaning. Performances are facilitated by a ‘conductor’ who talks to the audience and shapes the story for the actors to ‘playback’. Everyone’s voice is welcome.
A Playback Theatre performance draws people together as we see our common humanity through the enacted stories. Everyone watches the enactments together giving everyone a chance to feel the truth of someone’s story. This shared experience becomes a deep and intimate conversation which is created by the stories the audience shares.
Seeing the actors and musician create vignettes on the spot is exciting and inspiring. An atmosphere of warmth and empathy grows throughout the performance and a level of understanding emerges through the actors bringing your stories to life.
Playback Theatre is a unique form of improvisational theatre founded in 1975 in New York by Jonathan Fox, Jo Salas and the original Playback Theatre company.
