The Lives and Works of Elizabeth 1 and Nicholas Hilliard – an illustrated talk by Mark Cottle
Elizabeth 1 was one of the most remarkable women of a remarkable age. A survivor against the odds she was to establish herself as a powerful queen and oversee one of the great creative periods of English history.
Nicholas Hilliard, goldsmith, artist and Exeter’s most famous son was the great miniaturist of the age. In a career that lasted over 40 years, he was to secure a place for the miniature portrait at the heart of Elizabethan culture and beyond.
Mark Cottle was born on the Isles of Scilly and educated at Truro School in Cornwall and Birmingham University. He has spent his career, at home and abroad, in teaching, training and lecturing.
