Sustainability on Screen is part of “Telling Stories: The Humanities in an Age of Planetary Agenda-Setting”, a project which explores how humanities research can engage with the opportunities and challenges posed by planetary agendas. We are particularly interested in investigating the significance of story-telling to agenda-setting, both because stories serve to naturalise certain ways of thinking about and acting in the world, and because they can invite and inspire meaningful social and cultural engagement and action.
We are delighted to conclude our film series with a screening of OKJA, a Netflix film about Mija’s relationship with Okja, a genetically modified ‘super pig’. The companionship is disrupted when Okja is taken from South Korea to New York by a multinational corporation. Mija goes to rescue Okja from the meat industry but has to contend with others who have an interest in Okja’s fate. The film addresses themes of capitalism and consumption, especially dietary consumption and the meat industry.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with experts including Dr Ray Chan from the University of Exeter, drinks reception, and food swap for which people are invited to bring surplus food to exchange with others (home grown and home made contributions are very welcome). Please note that food exchanged during the swap is intended to be taken home, not consumed at Exeter Phoenix.
The film series is organised by Dr Ina Linge, Dr Virginia Thomas and Professor Paul Young and is part of a collaborative project between the University of Exeter and the University of British Columbia supported by a UBC Okanagan-Exeter Excellence Catalyst Grant and the Exeter Animal Studies Reading Group.
