Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) is an emotionally stunted and soft spoken radio journalist. He is also good with kids and has just undertaken an ambitious project travelling the country to interview a variety of kids about their thoughts concerning their world and their future.

They talk about climate change, animal extinction, loneliness and an array of other subjects. When Johnny is saddled with caring for his nine year-old chatterbox nephew Jesse, as a last-minute favour to his sister, Viv (Gabbie Hofffman) Jesse brings a new perspective and, as they travel from state to state, effectively turns the emotional tables on Johnny.

This irresistible and warm film by director Mike Mills (20thCentury Women) is shot in stylish monochrome and is rich with authenticity and honesty.
