Since their inception in 2009, the genre-defying Submotion Orchestra have moved seamlessly between deep electronica, jazz, soul and ambient downtempo, mesmerising audiences from Iceland to India. Their unique music is at once delicate and heavy, spacious and dense, highly atmospheric but firmly rooted. Earth-shaking bass and drums combine with lush keyboard and trumpet textures to create the perfect backdrop for the fragile beauty of Ruby Wood’s vocals.
Formed in Leeds in 2009, the band quickly made a splash on the wider scene, with their gigs and recordings – including classic debut album Finest Hour – creating a devoted fanbase. Five albums, numerous EPs and many sold-out UK and EU tours later, the tireless band are still going strong, with their most recent release Five Points (SMO Recordings) showcasing their most interesting music yet, one which ploughs a path through electronic, jazz, ambient and soul in the singular way that Submotion Orchestra can do.
“Stunning” The Guardian
“Full of brilliance and charm” The Observer
“Sizzles with late night city thrills” The Times
“Endlessly creative” Clash Music
Known for her haunting yet uplifting alt-pop, Natalie Holmes is a songwriter whose music will resonate deeply with all identifying as a cerebral wanderer. Over the past decade, she’s carved a path as an independent artist who consistently pushes the boundaries of songwriting and self-production, constantly balancing on the edge of the box to establish a sound that’s evocative yet remains comforting; and questioning everything along the way.
Natalie will also be returning on Sun 26 Oct for a seated solo show in Studio 1. Find out more >
