Introduction to 3D Modelling in Maya

Ever wondered how your favorite animated movies, video games, or product designs come to life? This beginner-friendly course introduces you to Maya, the professional software behind countless digital creations.

During this 4 week course you’ll get to grips with this industry standard software, learning the fundamental skills needed to start you on your 3D modelling journey, including:

Fundamentals – Master the Maya interface, navigation, and essential tools. Create your first 3D objects using primitive shapes and basic modeling techniques.

Modeling techniques – Learn to create simple organic and hard-surface models in Maya.

Texturing and Materials – Discover UV mapping, material creation, and texture application. Transform your models from basic geometry into visually compelling objects.

Lighting and Rendering – Explore lighting, camera’s and rendering in Maya, and learn about output formats.

This course is perfect for creative professionals, hobbyists, and career changers interested in:

  • Game development and design
  • Architecture and product visualization
  • Film and animation
  • 3D printing and prototyping
  • Digital art and illustration

No prior 3D experience required. Basic computer skills and familiarity with Apple OS and creative software are helpful but not essential.


Course Tutor: Charlie Davis

Charlie Davis, originally from Birmingham, began his career in 1994 as a stage technician with the NEC Group, working on major shows like Gladiators, Disney on Ice, Eurovision, The Eagles, WWE Rebellion, and Destiny’s Child over a ten-year span. From 1999, he spent over a decade with Banner Theatre as a sound and lighting technician and video editor. Founded by Ewan MacColl and Charlie Parker, Banner is one of the UK’s longest-running community theatre companies, known for its work with trade unions and marginalized communities.

In 2007, Charlie moved to Devon, continuing some freelance editing while teaching himself Autodesk Maya, Cinema 4D, and ZBrush during time as a stay-at-home dad. His skills led to work with Dynamo Ltd, redesigning the Exeter Chiefs’ helmet, contributing to Bing Bunny books, and animating Dinosaur Roar. At Curious Universe, he designed children’s toys for manufacture, including Gonk, Princess, and Puppy.
