Freefall & Freefall+

During the last year of lockdowns Exeter Phoenix was determined to find new ways for our 2 youth arts groups, Freefall and Freefall+ to continue working together. This has involved getting to grips with Zoom meetups, and doorstep deliveries of art supplies being biked around Exeter so that everyone in the groups could carry on making.

This exhibition celebrates all the amazing projects they have worked on during a time like no other.

About Freefall

Freefall is Exeter Phoenix’s youth arts group for young people between the ages of 13-16, usually running on Thursday evenings from 6-8pm during term time at Exeter Phoenix.

Freefall+ is a group delivered in partnership with local disability charity The Pelican Project, primarily aimed at 16-25 year old school leavers with special educational needs and their carers. They usually meet on Tuesday mornings at Exeter Phoenix.

Both groups are free to attend and give participants a chance to socialise, share ideas and develop creative projects together, working across a range of artforms and activities. The groups aim to give young people a deeper understanding and enjoyment of art, creativity and culture while helping to improve confidence and skills and increasing self-awareness and reflection.

Freefall sessions are run by qualified arts practitioners with the support of a broad range of guest artists and regularly explore ideas and events that connect with the wider programme of exhibitions, festivals and performances at Exeter Phoenix.

Freefall Lockdown Zine

Throughout the lockdown of 2020, Freefall worked together to create a zine, using a wide variety of techniques including printmaking, photography, animation and more. They used a combination of found materials and the supplies that were delivered to their homes to help with production.

Exeter Phoenix’s designer Darren Shaddick then helped compile the group’s contributions into a zine, which was printed thanks to kind support from The Arts Society Exeter.

A celebration of our cultural community  | Mon 9 Aug – Sun 15 Aug

Reason to Create is a pop-up festival in which we celebrate and showcase some of the incredible versatility, resilience and creativity of members of our city’s cultural community.

We have thrown our doors open for a week of free, low cost and pay-what-you-like events created by artists from our Creative Hub, that span a range of art-forms in a range of spaces in and around our building. Expect to find theatre shows, comedy, music, film & art, an insight into creative processes, networking events and a vibrant range of exciting, fresh ideas on show.

Inspired by the artists who told us that Exeter Phoenix offered them ‘a reason to create’ over lockdown, we are offering this platform to artists and audiences alike to get a taste of some of what makes the cultural community we share so special.
