Olivia Wilde (Booksmart) directs and stars in a poignant, hilarious, and emotionally honest portrayal of human relationships led by a stellar cast.

San Francisco couple Joe and Angela (Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde) are tightly wound partners whose differences seem to surface at every turn. When Angela invites their attractive, free-spirited upstairs neighbours (Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) over for dinner, what begins as a polite evening quickly threatens to unravel. While Angela is fascinated by the pair, Joe remains irritated by the constant noise drifting down from their apartment above.

The stage is set for an evening of sharp conversation, exposed insecurities, passive-aggressive jabs and simmering sexual tension. Shot on 35mm and adapted from the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs, The Invite features a sparkling screenplay from Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever), offering a witty and incisive examination of modern relationships.

As director, Wilde brings both emotional nuance and comic precision to the material, uncovering recognisable truths beneath the film’s escalating chaos. Her collaborative approach — workshopping scenes with the cast, shooting chronologically and allowing space for improvisation and discovery on set — lends the film a lived-in authenticity that elevates it beyond the familiar confines of the relationship drama.
