The Ramen Workshop now sold out. Tickets are still available for the screening of Tampopo.

How far would you go for the perfect ramen? Guided in her quest by scrappy truck drivers Gun and Gorō, Tampopo strives to create the best ramen around to serve from her roadside shop. In the process she is run through a rigorous training process, encouraged to steal secrets of broth-making and challenges other ramen-makers in Spaghetti Western (noodle Western?) style stand-offs.

The main quest for culinary perfection is intersected with brilliant standalone stories about different types of gourmand. From the couple who bring the kitchen into the bedroom, to the salaryman with an uncanny knowledge of French cuisine, to a cautionary tale about squeezing fruit, these vignettes add rich flavours to the delicious broth of Tampopo.

Sweet, peppered with hilarious moments and 100% guaranteed to have you desperate for a bowl of noodles, Tampopo is a nourishing watch that ignites every sense and remains one of the most delectable examples of food on film.

Ramen Workshop – SOLD OUT

Before the film you will have the chance to find out more about how to make ramen with Dr Celia Plender who previously worked as a chef and food writer specialising in Japanese cuisine. You will learn how to make a vegetarian ramen broth and toppings before eating what you have assembled (vegan options also available).

FOOD ON FILM: IN FOUR SEASONS

Discover a world of food on film with a compilation of documentaries, features and shorts from around the world, scheduled across four seasons.

Each season will explore food from a different social, cultural or political angle, to discover how it shapes the world around us – our identities, livelihoods and planet. Screenings will be accompanied by talks, workshops and events hosted by food researchers and producers, and there will be plenty of opportunities to get hands on with making and tasting.

Food on Film is delivered in partnership with Exeter Food: A Univeresity Research Network and the MA Food Studies

The season is also delivered in conjunction with Exeter Phoenix Social [practice] programme.

Social [practice] : Taste

Social [practice] offers an alternative platform for artists and creative producers to meet and make together in a series of hosted, hands- on projects. Along the way it aims to explore sharing, meeting & making, hosting, skill-exchanges and collaborative practice, often easing in with a sociable drink or two for good measure.

Winter // taste

In the winter season we look at taste – as a sense, a preference and an identity marker to explore the ways in which food and eating are not only sensory, but also social.

We start by navigating the rarefied world of fine wine – a drink often associated with high status and high incomes. The documentary Blind Ambition follows the trials and tribulations of a team of Zimbabwean sommeliers as they prepare to compete in the Olympics of the wine world for the first time.

Next we have the classic Japanese film Tampopo, which follows a single mother & ramen shop owner’s journey to make the tastiest bowl of noodles.

Our final film looks deeper into the life of the ramen bar with documentary Come Back Anytime. You’ll also have the chance to stimulate your own senses during the season with wine tasting, ramen noodle soup making and much more.

Also, take a look at our Social Vessel session, taking place as part of Exeter Phoenix Social [practice] programme, and make your own Ramen bowl.
