This month in Art and Ideas, our series of courses dedicated to exploring Latin American and Latinx (do you want to include any Latinx artists?) visual artists, we will delve into the work of queer artists who use diverse artforms to examine themes of sexuality, gender, and cultural identity. Participants will explore these artists’ work through a mix of presentations, discussions and practical art activities, and gain insights into how these artists challenge societal norms, express lived experiences, and celebrate diversity.
Artists featured in this course include, Félix González-Torres (USA- Cuba), Enrique Espinola, Verónica Fernández and Feliciano Centurión (all from Paraguay) and Paola Paredes (Ecuador) whose innovative approaches span artforms such as textiles, painting, photography, installations and ceramics Join us to expand your understanding of contemporary art and its role in shaping cultural conversations around identity and expression.
Artist and educator Ludmila Centurión grew up in Asunción, Paraguay where she studied and worked before moving to the UK to complete a MA in Creative Arts in Education at The University of Exeter. After graduating in 2021, she has chosen to stay in England to continue exploring the arts, arts education, creativity and this country’s diverse cultures. She has over 10 years of teaching art to a broad range of students, from children to adults. Her studies and workshops draw on the ideas of British philosopher and art historian, Sir Herbert Read and her own cultural heritage.
