This course is aimed at beginners who are ready to embrace a more abstract style of painting. Working from still life flower arrangements you will learn a range of techniques and processes, colour theory and composition. Big gestural marks, excellent use of colour, space and intuitive painting will help get rid of limiting beliefs and create more freedom in your work.
In this course, you’ll learn everything – how to prep a canvas, pick the best working colour palette, how to loosen up and create a very loose sketch. Then you go on exploring the layering process and the fundamentals of what makes an abstract painting look good.
Week 1
Materials, mixing colours and creating your own colour swatch library. Prepping canvases and creating a loose sketch
Week 2
Focusing on composition, creating depth and mark making.
Week 3
Gestural mark making and incorporating a famous artists style into your work.
Week 4
Working on a larger canvas. Tying all the parts
together and creating a large abstract floral work.
Week 5
Create 4 studies with different dramatic aspects. Using tone, colour, mark making and a palette knife.
Sophie Berger is a practicing fine artist with work in UK and international galleries, she is a regular teacher for the short courses at Plymouth College of Art and Kingbeare Studios. Sophie’s work is greatly affected by colour and atmosphere, both of which change due to weather and seasons, so observation of the environment and surroundings influence her work both directly as well as subconsciously.
Living in a remote village on Dartmoor, Sophie spends her time on the moors or coastline, sketching in charcoal and coloured ink then using these to influence her paintings back in her studio.
