Meet your local specialist solicitor Bridget Garrood (she/her) whose lived experience over the past 30 years as a cis lesbian family lawyer has convinced her that understanding our legal rights, within marginalised identities, and celebrating progress towards improving these rights, can help to support our wellbeing.
With this in mind, the focus in this session will be on celebrating some legal achievements and resources, such as the Trans Legal Project; the strategic case work of The Good Law Project, including crowdfunded Legal Defence Fund for Transgender Lives, showing how litigation can protect and defend the rights of transgender people to live as themselves.
Come As You Are Festival‘s Sunday morning legal session will celebrate the successful discrimination claim of non-binary employee Ms R Taylor against former employer Jaguar Land Rover Ltd, where it was successfully argued, that the protected characteristic of ‘gender reassignment’ under the Equality Act 2010 protects non-binary employees. Barrister Robin Moira White represented Ms Taylor, and has also co-authored A Practical Guide to Transgender Law, another milestone worthy of trans legal celebration.
Bridget has practised law in Exeter since 1994 and is one of the LGBTQ+ affirmative wellbeing professionals based in the South West, as listed in IAAYW Directory.
She is an active member of The Law Society’s LGBTQ+ lawyers committee and led on The Law Society’s trans and non-binary inclusion project.
Bridget is one of a handful of lawyers practicing in England and Wales whose legal expertise includes specialist advice for trans and non-binary people.
