Surprised to learn from her grandma that traditional African wax prints fabrics were a colonial invention, documentary-maker Aiwan Obinyan sets out to explores the story of how one fabric came to symbolise a continent, its people and their struggle for freedom.
In association with Criminal Ornamentation: Yinka Shonibare MBE curates the Arts Council Collection (19 Jan to 17 Mar) next door at RAMM. A riot of colour and pattern, this intriguing exhibition includes eye-popping art ranging from film to fashion and ceramics to sculpture.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director, Aiwan Obinyan which is led by Kalkidan Legesse, founder of Sancho’s.
