Ana – a wife, mother and advertising executive in her forties, with a comfortable life in a bourgeois Catalan family – rips up the rules when she decides to inject a bit of truth into her existence and take back control of her life. To the horror of her family, Ana decides to leave her husband and head off on a road trip to the coast, taking her 12-year-old daughter Bárbara with her. Down by the sea, conventions melt away as Ana enjoys her newfound freedom.

Director and screenwriter Cecilia Bartolomé is one of the most transgressive women filmmakers of her time. She graduated from Spain’s Official Film School in 1969, but not until after the death of Franco and the return to democracy was she able to make this feature film.

The screening will be hosted by members of the Leading Women in Portuguese and Spanish Cinema and Television 1970-1980 project team: Professor Sally Faulkner, Dr Jara Fernández-Meneses and Professor Nuria Triana-Toribio.

This event is supported by the Centre for Translating Cultures, University of Exeter and the ‘Invisibles e insumisas / Invisíveis e insubmissas: Leading Women in Portuguese and Spanish Cinema and Television,1970-1980’ project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

With thanks to ¡Viva! Festival, Manchester and Video Mercury, Madrid.
