Ozu’s best-known film, about an elderly couple visiting their grown-up offspring in postwar Tokyo, is a hugely poignant study of familial relationships and responsibilities and is regularly considered one of the greatest films of all time.
An elderly couple visit their grown-up offspring in Tokyo, but find most of them preoccupied with work and the trappings of post-war city life. Though loosely based on Leo McCarey’s Make Way for Tomorrow, Ozu’s best-known film feels entirely characteristic of his wry, wise response to the vicissitudes of modern family life; it builds, calmly but unflinchingly, to a coda of enormous poignancy.
