2012 and frustrated with the direction of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Bergoglio requests permission from the Pope to retire. Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences as these two very different men must find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.

Staring Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes explores these holy men as men, unfailing in their faith but capable of weakness all the same. Director Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener, City of God) allows humour to flourish as we see the Two Popes tease each other, argue about football, acknowledge their own egos and struggles in connecting with God.
