Six years after the sublime, award-winning Le Havre, Finnish master Aki Kaurismäki returns with comedy-drama The Other Side of Hope. Winner of the Silver Bear.
Wikstrom, a former travelling salesman wins big playing poker becomes entwined in the journey of Khaled, a Syrian refugee who has arrived in Helsinki as a stowaway on a coal freighter. Struggling to gain asylum Khaled and forced to live illegally before accepting help from Wikstrom.
Shot on 35mm and rich with his signature palette Kaurismäki’s explores the reality of what it might be like for a refugee while retaining his gentle, humanistic and often light hearted approach to story telling.

To mark Refugee Week Exeter Phoenix will be co-hosting a special panel discussion following the screening on Mon 19 June.
Brought together in partnership with Exeter City of Sanctuary and Refugee Support Group Devon the panel will feature Dr Souad Fadel from Exeter Mosque, Michael Grace from Refugee Support Group Devon and Syrian academic and refugee Aqeel Abdulla.
