Top Ten Audience Award, Hot Docs 2015

Special Mention for Best Documentary, CinemAmbiente

Canada, France, Costa Rica, Germany, Netherlands, Turkey, USA, 2015, 90 mins, dir. Su Rynard

A visually thrilling ode to the beauty and importance of the imperiled songbird, and what it means to all of us on both a global and human level if we lose them. Humans once believed that birds could carry messages, their presence was meaningful. They have helped predict the change of seasons, the coming of storms and the rise of toxins in the food chain. Once again they have something to tell us, and the message is not a comfortable one.

Bird

Dir Margaret Salmon | UK | 2016 | 4 mins

A visual and aural riff on the pioneering films of Mary Field and her early work for the Secrets of Nature series. With a score by the influential electronic music composer Matthew Herbert, Bird is about observation and environment, prompting a consideration of the ways in which cinematic tools – camera, lens, colour, movement, voice, sound – heighten and humanise our interpretation of the natural world. Screened as part of #TheArtistsCinema.

Venue: Exeter Phoenix, Studio 74
