The Magic of Sound in Cinema

The Magic of Sound in Cinema: Improving sound design in your films.

Learn about spotting, editing, assembling dialogue, sound effects, foley, and music in order to enhance your film making. By drawing upon the work of professional filmmakers, film theorists and using Garageband this course will show you how to improve your filmmaking by drawing upon ‘sound strategies’ and putting them into practice. This is suitable for filmmakers; sound designers and composers as well laying down the foundation for students who want pursue a career in this area.

The course will draw upon the work of Theo Van Leeuwen (Speech, Music Sound, 1999), David Sonnenschein (The Expressive Power of Music, Voice and Sound, 2001) and Michael Chion (Audiovision, 1994). It will also include many film clips of classic and contemporary cinema. This course will be taught by Dr Gilbert Gabriel (composer and lecturer at the London Film school).
