The Western world’s indifference to the refugee crisis is put under the spotlight in this tense moral thriller about a woman on a solo sailing trip who encounters a sinking boat of refugees.
Emergency doctor Rike (Susanne Wolf) has set sail alone to fulfil a long-held dream to travel to Ascension Island in the Atlantic ocean. Her voyage is cut short, however, when she comes across an overloaded, slowly sinking boat full of refugees. Over the radio, the coastguard warns her the “official policy” is to not engage, but can she really do nothing as time goes by and situation worsens? Rike is forced to make a life or death decision as she is pushed ever further towards her physical, psychological, and moral limits…
A powerful story about personal responsibility, privilege and empathy, this is a film with no easy answers.
