Statement Mending

Session 3 of an evening workshop series. Statement Mending; including an introduction to Japanese Sashiko techniques.

SEWING TECHNIQUES FOR REPAIR AND REUSE

The growth of the fast fashion industry has meant that a shocking 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. We can all start to tackle this problem by mending and repurposing the clothes we already have, helping to reduce our environmental impact and ultimately changing our consuming habits.

Designer and Tutor Nicola Cox is offering a series of five evening workshops and two 1-day workshops that will give you some of the basic sewing skills you need to look after and maintain your clothes. You can attend individual sessions or book all 5 to create a personal ‘sample book’ of techniques or spend a day building and developing your mending skills in a 1 day workshop.

The sessions are aimed both at those who want to learn some basic techniques and those who want to refresh existing sewing skills. There will be basic hand sewing equipment and materials available to use in the sessions but we recommend that you put together a simple textile repair kit from the following:

  • Off cuts of leather, denim and other small pieces of fabric for patching
  • A variety of hand sewing needles
  • A darning mushroom
  • An embroidery hoop
  • A variety of threads
  • A selection of embroidery threads
  • Buttons of different sizes
  • A selection of fastenings, including hooks and eyes.poppers ect.

Please also bring along items you would like to repair or practice your new found skills on such as socks and small items of clothing.

Places are limited and pre-booking is required. To learn about the Covid-19 safety measures we have put in place please read the following information about your visit to Exeter Phoenix >>
