Searching for Sugar Man is an inspirational, award-winning documentary from producer Simon Chinn (Man on Wire and Project Nim) which tells the enthralling, true story of Rodriguez, the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was. Discovered in 1960s Detroit and soon after he recorded an album, with high hopes for international success. Sadly that success didnt materialise and Rodriguez disappeared, only leaving behind mysterious rumours of an onstage suicide. When a bootleg copy of Rodriguezs album surfaces in South Africa, his anti-establishment tracks strike a chord with young people struggling with Apartheid, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. Bendjellouls film seeks to uncover the myths and mysteries that surround this enigmatic figure.
