Brianna Ghey was a 16-year-old transgender girl from Birchwood in Warrington, Cheshire, who was stabbed in her local park on 11th February 2023.
Her murder prompted vigils and memorials across the country, marking her tragic death and reflecting on the culture of transphobia she lived and died in.On Saturday 18th February 2023 a vigil was held at Exeter’s Cathedral Green. Many people gathered to commemorate the death of this young girl, stand in solidarity and share reflections and offer support to the trans community.
This exhibition shares documentation of the displays created during the day and re-presents some of the reflections shared by speakers at the vigil and other messages written in the condolence book at the event itself.
Visitors are invited to write their reflections in the new condolence book provided for this display.
The vigil was organised by the Trans and Non-Binary Cafe, The Exeter University LGBTQ+ Staff Network, and the Exeter University LGBTQ+ Student Society and Queer and BAME Collective.
This exhibition was organised by the Trans and Nonbinary Cafe, a support and info sharing space for trans, nonbinary, intersex and/or questioning adults, in the University and in the wider community. You can find out more and get in touch here.
