Marlina is a young widow woman who lives alone in a remote farmhouse with the embalmed corpse of her deceased husband. One night, thieves arrive, entitled by centuries of male domination to steal her livestock and possessions. Marlina thinks fast and fights back, killing several of her attackers.
The next day Marlina is on the road with a severed head in one hand and a sabre in the other. She embarks on a journey of redemption and empowerment, but the ghost of one of the men she killed returns to haunt her.
This Indonesian drama is a powerful, provocative and visually stunning new entry in the feminist western subgenre.
