Finding your story through landscape with Ben Smith

Novel Nights

How can writers use landscape and place within fiction? Novelist, Ben Smith explores how to make setting an active agent in fiction rather than just a backdrop for plot. Join us at this Novel Nights author talk and Q&A. In the Writers’ Showcase three writers will share their fiction on stage.

Ben’s debut novel, Doggerland is a tale of loneliness and survival, archaeological remains and rusting wind turbines, set against the backdrop of a water-filled landscape.

Ben Smith lives in Cornwall and is a lecturer in creative writing at Plymouth University, specializing in environmental literature and focusing particularly on oceans, climate change and the ‘Anthropocene’.
