Growing and Seed Saving Project

In Spring 2023 Exeter Seed Bank were gifted 70 varieties of tomato seeds by Knightshayes National Trust. This was the start of an ambitious project that has culminated in Exeter’s first Tomato Festival held on 10 September at Daily Bowl in the city centre.

300 tomato seedlings grown by staff and residents of Stallcombe House were distributed to community gardening groups, allotments, libraries and individual growers. Over 40 local Tomato Guardians also volunteered to grow tomatoes from seed. Despite a tricky growing season, a crop was grown and through a process of discussion and tasting tests the most successful varieties have been selected for seed saving. The seeds from these varieties will be made available from the Exeter Seed Bank for the 2024 growing season.
