Erika Cann – Pseudomorphs of a Crater

In this new body of work, Erika Cann explores deep-time narratives of the local landscape of Exeter. Through research and storytelling, gathered imagery and unknown objects, this site-specific installation expands upon her investigation into the relationship between people and place, through the geology beneath our feet.

A stone’s throw from the gallery, a volcano lies extinct. A deep rumbling envelops the space, purple basalt dots the walls of the gardens, and shadows in the landscape provide glimpses of what lurks underneath. Through the animation of such concepts, Erika hopes to find a visual language for understanding geological timescales and our impact on the environment.

There is an invitation to leave the gallery and explore the landscape. Erika is interested in non-gallery sites and expanded forms of installation in a landscape, allowing viewers to engage with the work and the environment from their own perspectives.
