Dubbed an urban Western, Dogman sees master filmmaker Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah) return to the crime thriller genre with a tension filmed and relentlessly captivating offering.
Dogman takes place along a dusty, beachside wasteland where pint-sized dog groomer, Marcello, (Marcello Fonte) wants two things to look after his dogs and take his daughter on exotic holidays.
But to fund this lifestyle, he runs a side business which has more unsavoury clientele and he soon finds himself involved in a dangerous relationship of subjugation with Simone, a former violent boxer who terrorises the entire neighbourhood. When Simone exploits him too much, Marcello must make a crucial and potentially dangerous decision in order to regain his dignity.
Marcello Fonte won the Best Actor award at Cannes for his outstanding performance but it is Garrone’s remarkable grasp of narrative, conflict, and palpable milieu that stages realist filmmaking at its best.
The screening on Sun 4 Nov will be accompanied by a special introduction.
????? A compelling opera of beta-male criminal martydom
PETER BRADSHAW, THE GUARDIAN
????? A powerful and endearing portrait of the human struggle for acceptance and courage. Garrones fascinating streak continues.
