‘My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, And blues is really, all I’ve ever known…’
Sure it’s blues but Cedric Burnside’s music is anything but ancient, the rich tradition of Mississippi Hill Country blues dragged kicking and screaming into the modern day, a shot of the real deal for fans of The Black Keys and The White Stripes.
Given his first guitar by Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, 39 year old Cedric’s a scion of blues royalty, the revered R. L. Burnside clan. He was literally born into the blues, mainlining the music of Jnr Kimbrough and hitting the road with his Grand Pa R.L. when he was thirteen years old. It’s about all he’s ever had. ‘I write my music how I live my life‘, he admits and there’s certainly blood on his tracks. From a poverty stricken childhood without running water, radio or TV, to losing family members it’s been a hard road.
Now after Grammy nominations, movie scores and numerous awards it’s payback time.
Supporting is Detroit native Todd Albright. Signed to Jack White’s Third Man Record label Todd’s grounded in the pre-war tradition of blues guitarists, dishing up a gritty and soulful take on the blues masters.
There will be a mixture of seating and standing available.
