Botanical Illustration

5 Week Course

Plants have great cultural importance they are used as symbols of identity as well as for food and medicine.

These courses which will be running throughout the year will take a close look at the plants that we associate with the changing season as Summer turns to Autumn as well as those that we use in our everyday lives.

We will follow the seasons and take a close look at the plants we use in our everyday lives, creating a personal collection of illustrations documenting the herbs, vegetables and flowers that have a special significance for us.

As well as using traditional drawing materials we will be experimenting with pigments derived from plants such as tea, coffee, spices and peel and exploring the following techniques:

  • Observation
  • Texture
  • Line
  • Colour
  • Proportion
  • Volume
  • Light and shadow
  • Composition

We will also look at Botanical Illustration within the context of art histories

In the final week of the of the course we will take some time to collectively share our illustrations and stories

This course is suitable for those who have no previous experience as well as those who are returning to expand their existing skills.

All basic materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring along personal favourites as well as some specimens to work from.
