Exeter Contemporary Open is the annual chance to see a selection of work from the best emerging artists from across the UK.
This years shortlist of eight artists includes Michelle Conway, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Naomi Frears, Susie Green, Brendan Lancaster, James Parkinson, Devlin Shea, Dorine van Meel.
Three further moving image artists have been selected to show their work alongside those included in the main exhibition in two special, seated screenings in Studio 74, Exeter Phoenix’s independent cinema space.
The programme includes work from:
Anne-Marie Creamer experiments with cinematic and theatrical forms to explore projects that migrate across mediums and formats, built around lingering phantoms of lost artefacts and adrift protagonists, that also act as tools or transmitters of failed historical projects.
A documentary portrait centred on a remote settlement of self-built shed and cabin homes, located on the sand dunes of England’s north west coastline, near Barrow-In-Furness. The film explores the social and ecological topography of this off-grid, outlying community.
Working between video, painting, sound and installation Thomas Yeomans appropriates visual and aural languages that seek to persuade, influence and manipulate. He recontextualises found material not to subert it, but rather to divert it.
Study In Hindsight is a close, unsentimental and dislocated conversation between what Frears describes as ‘little films of nothing’ and a text in five parts, written and read by her daughter, poet Ella Frears, which reflects on their relationship.
Disobedient Children sets out to unravel the relationship between our own desires, and desires as they are formulated for us by others. Van Meel’s script investigates how identities could be produced differently and how one can be political within an increasingly neoliberal society.
