Use a hands-on, punk approach to produce a 7 single cover and poster in a day.
Punk design was fast, messy, unpolished and assertive – whether it was a single cover, a promotional poster or a DIY zine, these principles still stand. Punk design makes use of collage, cartoon drawings, hand-lettering, rub-down lettering, ransom-note lettering, stencils, rubber-stamping and black and white Xerox copying.
This workshop will help you to; generate ideas, experiment with type and image and produce a DIY set of graphics any punk band would be proud of!
Tutor:
Mike Krage
Mike Krage worked in the music business for 10 years working with iconic artists such as Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and Nick Lowe. He has designed record sleeves for That Petrol Emotion, Captain Beefheart, Charlie Rich, Al Green, The Damned and a whole host of bands that never made it into the charts but went straight to the bargain bin. He was the in-house designer for Demon Records (formerly Stiff Records) and also worked with such labels as Ace Records, Rykodisc and Warner Brothers.
Mike is a lecturer at Exeter School of Art teaching on the graphic design degree course.
