Using Ritual, Shamanism and Magic in Theatre Performance

Theatre and ritual share ancient roots. Long before formal stages existed, storytellers, poets, and ritual specialists used rhythm, gesture, voice, and symbolic action to bring stories, spirits, and worlds to life. This practical workshop explores how performers can draw on those traditions to deepen their stage presence and expand their storytelling techniques.

Led by Philip Kingslan John, co-founder of award-winning theatre and arts company Four of Swords, and creator of the solo mythic performance Whispers of Wōden, the session introduces participants to theatrical tools inspired by ritual and shamanic storytelling practices. Through demonstration and guided exercises, participants will explore three core techniques: invocation (calling presence into the space through voice and language), transformation (shifting between identities and states of being), and ritual action (using repeated gesture and rhythm to create meaning and focus).

The workshop encourages playful exploration while revealing how these techniques can heighten attention, embodiment, and connection with an audience. No prior experience with ritual or mythology is required—only curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Actors, storytellers, and performers of all kinds are welcome.
