Slow Stitching – Tell your story in Creative Textiles!
Everyone has a story. We are all part of life’s rich tapestry… Each of us
experiences at least one or two of life’s big shifts at some point. The happy ones: falling in love, getting married, starting a family, or becoming a grandparent, for example. And the sad or challenging ones like divorce, bereavement, or children leaving the nest. But where there’s life, there’s creativity!
This series of five weekly workshops will translate these stories into a
unique piece of narrative artwork, namely a Story Box, embracing life’s knocks and delights, and becoming a richly worked object full of charm, made entirely by hand. A fabric collage if you like…
The process of stitching by hand slows our breathing and provides an oasis of calm in our busy lives. A special kind of conversation happens when people come together to sew.
You’ll be encouraged to discover and reflect on aspects of yourself and your experiences, and to bring along personal scraps of fabric and your own pictures from home, which will be printed onto cloth for you. You can embroider into these as well to personalise your creation even more, adding buttons, lace, or words if you like, to tell your tale, As the course progresses, you will work through the process of balancing these into a cohesive piece of work, learning textile skills along the way.
Your final box will not only be deeply personal to you but can become a beautiful part of your home; it might even be useful for keeping your next craft project in!
Tuesdays – 6.30pm – 9pm
Rosy Tydeman is a textile artist and tutor with a studio in central Exeter called La Vie En Rose Makery – named after the song about seeing life through rose tinted spectacles! Rosy’s work focuses on the moments of love and joy found in everyday life, if we choose to notice, in what can be a rather overwhelming world…
Having worked as a teacher, a shoe maker, and a gauntlet maker for theatres, Rosy ran the art cafe The Glorious Art House in Exeter until 2023 ago, when she sold it to focus on her art and workshops.
Alongside creating fabric clocks, pictures and various smaller items, Rosy teaches a range of creative textile workshops.
She is especially passionate about Slow Stitching – hand sewing in a gentle and mindful way, letting your cares dissolve into the making, and learning simple embroidery stitches to create beautiful things!
The magic that happens when we put down our phones and come away from laptops and TV screens, is more and more valuable in our busy lives. The resulting object is a work of art that is full of love, and that money can’t buy.
Workshop attendees get 10% off all food and hot drinks at the Café Bar.
