In its enormous spareness, Akerman’s film seems simple, but it encompasses an entire world.

Jeanne Dielman is an astonishing, compelling movie experiment, one that has been analyzed and argued over for decades and was, more recently, voted Sight and Sound’s Greatest Film of All Time in the 2022 Critics’ poll (the first time a female filmmaker has taken the number one spot since the poll’s inception in 1952).
