* Descriptive Subtitling (DS)
A service for our Deaf/deaf and hard of hearing customers that displays additional auditory information on the screen.
As well as showing the dialogue, Descriptive Subtitles provide information on other significant sounds. For example: when something is being sung; when a phone rings; when a door slams. This extra information allows customers using the subtitles to access the film more fully.
Director Mati Diop turns her hand to documentarty in this Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear winner.
In 2021, 26 objects from the Kingdom of Dahomey leave Paris and are returned to present-day Benin. How should these art treasures, stolen from ancestors, be received in a country which has reinvented itself in their absence?
Observational and typically layered with supernatural moments (like her first feature ATLANTICS) Diop approaches the contemporary questions around belonging in our postcolonial world by examining ownership and exhibition, and employing multiple points of view, including—most strikingly—those of the artifacts themselves as they sail in darkness over the ocean to their rightful home.
Rated PG -mild threat, discrimination references
