A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things

+ DIRECTOR Q&A

Mark Cousins’ most recent documentary, A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things, explores how an encounter with a glacier shaped Scottish Artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s vision of the world.

Through archive footage, personal letters and interviews from the people she knew and worked with this documentary looks at the artists life and work and reflects on her journey through art and the great mystery of creativity. Featuring Tilda Swinton as the voice of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, the film tells the story of a remarkable artist and a magnificent obsession.

One day in 1949, a young Scottish painter climbed a Swiss glacier. The experience rewired her brain, and transformed her art. Barns-Graham was synaesthetic – associating letters, names and people with particular colours – and Cousins explores how her neurodiversity and her encounter with the glacier shaped her vision of the world.

Join us after the screening for a in-person Q&A with director Mark Cousins, hosted by local artist Naomi Hart.
