Nina Nastasia is a singer and songwriter who has created a distinctive, emotionally powerful body of work that has roots in folk and Americana, but with a dark, Gothic sensibility. Nastasia’s performances are built around her acoustic guitar, usually with arrangements that use spare string sections and minimalistic, dynamic percussion to complement her lyrics – which are intensely personal and unpretentiously literate.
Her former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson was the uncredited producer on most of her albums; he worked up the arrangements and chose the musicians who would accompany her. Over time, Nastasia’s relationship with him had become difficult and dysfunctional, and she told him she was leaving him. The following day, Gudjonsson committed suicide. Struggling with shock and guilt, she began to write songs again to make sense of the complex emotions she experienced.
This new album, Riderless Horse, was released in 2022 and is her first solo record. It documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability.

UK-based, indie-ambient folk singer-songwriter Ollie Dixon grew up in North Devon and after making a mark on the South West music scene with his with reverb-soaked atmospherics and warm-delayed acoustics, is gaining wider traction both here and abroad. After a sell-out show in Exeter Cavern this January, and before sets at festivals including Boardmasters and Spring Classic, Ollie join us at Exeter Phoenix!
Inspired by the likes of Bon Iver, Ben Howard, Taylor Latham and Daughter, his latest singles Islands, St Agnes & Harbour have been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday & Fresh Finds Folk, and received support from BBC Introducing.
‘Everything slows and the otherworldliness is emphasised as enigmatic sounds drift into play. [Harbour] is a track that can genuinely be called evocative’ – Fresh On The Net
