Animated Family-Friendly Short Films with an Immersive Experience!

Join us as we venture with witches, witness a meeting between a boy & a dog, get thrilled with lost plush toys on adventure, and find friendship on Christmas and more with these fantastic shorts. Inspired by the Bideford Witch Trials of 1682 (the original misunderstood outcasts), we will explore contemporary societal “outcasts”. Expect lots of fun, thrilling adventures, and even heartwarming stories, that help us recognise that the judgments that we make, can lead to the creation of outcasts.

    Films in this programme include:

    · Room On The Broom (directed by Jan Lachauer & Max Lang, 2012, United Kingdom)

The OSCAR-nominated animation Room on the Broom is a magical tale about friendship and family from best-selling Gruffalo author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler.

    · The Present (directed by Jacob Frey, 2014, Germany)

The award-winning short animation The Present tells the story of a boy who would rather spend his time indoors playing videogames instead of discovering what’s waiting outside. The Present had a very successful festival circuit, running on over 180 film festivals and winning more than 50 awards.

    · Lost & Found (directed by Andrew Goldsmith & Bradley Slabe, 2018, Australia)

The award-winning animation Lost & Found is a stop motion short film that tugs at the heartstrings. A clumsy crochet dinosaur must unravel itself to save the love of its life. Lost & Found took home the Best Short Animation Award at the AACTA’s and was shortlisted for a 2019 Academy Award.

    · The Lost Letter (directed by Kealan O’ Rourke, 2016, Ireland)

Narrated by Kate Winslet (Titanic), The Lost Letter tells the tale of a young boy as he prepares his neighbourhood for Christmas. That is until he confronts the one lady who doesn’t want the holiday to come at all. The determined boy does all he can to bring colour to her dreary world, only to discover the truth behind her lack of Christmas spirit.

    · Stella (directed by Izzy Burton, 2019)

Directed by Izzy Burton, Stella is the story of a woman who, when spending Christmas alone, finds friendship in an unlikely place. For many of us, Christmas is undoubtedly the most wonderful time of the year. But for over half a million older people, the season is not something to look forward to. Passion Animation Studios, an Academy Award-winning independent production studio, beautifully depicts the silent suffering of those with no choice but to spend the season alone.

Exeter is the last place in England that women were hung as witches. We invite you to return to the place where those women were tried, and sentenced to death, for an immersive short film experience, that in strange ways, shapes, & forms, reflect that ancient evil.

Join us in Rougemont Gardens under the moon and sky on Thursday, Friday or Saturday for one of 6 different site-specific expanded cinema shows, or get a pass and experience them all.

Craft Cinema has been working with MA International Film Business Students from the University of Exeter and the London Film School to develop a unique and immersive expanded cinema show. This is more than just a screening, it is an experience!

Expect weird and wonderful short films woven with art and performance, programmed by an international group of cinephiles & professionals, that are destined to take their place at the forefront of the film industry worldwide, delivering their own responses to Exeter’s specific local history.

This event will take place outdoors. We advise you to dress for all weather and bring appropriate clothing if it is wet or cold. In the event that the forecast predicts weather that may cause a disruption to shows we will contact all customers in advance and follow Exeter Phoenix’s cancellation policy.
