This workshop examines the role nostalgia, fan-culture and popular-culture play in shaping both our memories and our connections to one another. It also explores how our interests and hobbies might positively impact our mental health, and fuel our creativity.
Ahead of his show FANBOY, which comes to Exeter Phoenix on 8th October, writer-performer Joe Sellman-Leava will lead you through some of the storytelling exercises he uses to create his shows, offering ways to form narratives out of memories.
Participants of all experiences and backgrounds are welcome, including artists and students of any discipline, or none at all. Whether you’re a veteran artist, enjoy telling stories in your spare time, or are just curious about how your interests or hobbies might forge new connections, this is a fun, practical workshop where you can explore new ideas and meet new people.
Joe is an actor, writer and producer who grew up in Devon. He co-founded Worklight Theatre in Exeter, in 2011, with whom he has made several devised shows, including How to Start a Riot, as well as award-winning solo shows Labels (Fringe First, 2015) and Monster, both of which toured internationally. His new show, Fanboy, was critically acclaimed at Edinburgh Fringe 2022, and is currently touring the UK. Joe also writes for television, including the pre-school series Pip & Posy.
