Alongside their exhibition at the Walkway Gallery, The Photobook Project CIC will be showcasing three of their short films. Founded in 2015, the newly Devon-based CIC uses the arts (primarily photography) to give people living with dementia the power to document, share and celebrate their own lives and perspectives.
Their participants’ photos reveal moments of joy, beauty, meditation, companionship and silliness, redirecting the conversation around diagnosis away from ‘loss’ and towards the possibilities that still remain in life.
The Photobook Project (2022)
Scott M Salt’s documentary captures an intergenerational project that The Photobook Project ran with Camelford Memory Cafe and Sir James Smith’s Community School.
AMANZE: A portrait of a pirate (2021)
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Lucy Hawes, AMANZE is a heartfelt portrait of The Photobook Project Ambassador, Ronald Amanze, a music producer who is living with dementia. From Harlesden to Luton, we are transported through time, peeling back the layers of Ronald Amanze and his incredible life. Son of Windrush parents, we explore his Jamaican roots, following as he navigates adolescence before founding the successful Time Radio pirate station. Then one day he receives life changing news that will shape his life forever, his dementia diagnosis.
Ronald Amanze in Conversation with Ellie Robinson-Carter (2021)
An interview between Ronald Amanze and The Photobook Project’s Founding Artistic Director, in which they discuss his involvement in the project.
