Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun returns to his home country to create this powerful and poignant film about the sacred bonds between mother and daughter.
Amina is a single mother to 15 year-old Maria, a smart, popular girl who attend the local high school, but who has just been expelled for being pregnant. On learning that Maria does not want to keep the baby Amina becomes determined to find a way to support her daughter while placating the religious conformity within her local community where abortion is condemned both by religion and law. Being forced to navigate a patriarchal society and finding solidarity in each other and with the women around them, can Amina and Maria find the answer they need?
★★★★★ – ‘“One of the best films of the year… astonishingly realised and lingers with you long after”
