Dir. Sean Baker, USA, 115 mins, 2017
The latest film by Sean Baker (Tangerine), juxtaposes the childhood wonder and a sense of adventure with the harsh realities of the adults struggling around them.
Hallee (Bria Vinaite) and her six-year-old daughter Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) live on a cheap motel near an Orlando freeway, in the shadows of a cartoon inspired theme park. As Hallee struggles to keep menial jobs and a roof over their head, Moonee grabs everyday by the tail, setting of on adventures with her friends from nearby motels. When life takes a further downward spiral Moonee defiance to her surroundings and love for her mother are tested in the face of adversity.
An ingenious and visionary tale exploring the ups and downs of living life within Americas failing economy.
‘It is a glorious film in which warmth and compassion win out over miserabilism or irony, painted in bright blocks of sunlit colour like a childs storybook and often happening in those electrically charged magic-hour urban sunsets that the director Sean Baker also gave us in his zero-budget breakthrough Tangerine.’?????
