USA, 2015. 128 mins. Dir. Tom McCarthy.
Tom McCarthy’s returns to past form with Spotlight, winner of the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. McCarthy is known for his care and attention to the cruelties that are befall ordinary people in films like The Station Agent and The Visitor. Despite the absolutely stunning cast (easier to ask which top American talent is not involved), the film eschews glitzy mechanics and flashy performances, instead respecting the harrowing real life situation that it depicts.
Boston 2001. The Boston Globe staff, led by Michael Keaton as Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson, are slowly unravelling systematic cover ups of child abuse by the Catholic Church. Aided by Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams), Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo) and Matt Carroll (Brian d’Arcy Jones), the team are pushed to breaking point. A highly effective and tense procedural newsroom drama this film deals with a disturbing subject matter with a searching intensity and a rare sensitivity
Its that all-too-rare beast: a movie thats both important and engrossing ?????
