Germany, 137 mins, 2006, dir. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

A classic tale of corruption, politics and human drama, with a special introduction from German film specialist Ute Wölfel.
Set in 1984 in East Germany, Stasi Captain Wiesler begins the surveillance of playwright Georg Dreyman when it is suggested he poses a threat to the state.
This captivating, Oscar winning political thriller and human drama was the first of its kind to address the power conflicts and insecurities surrounding the fall of the Berlin Wall with stunning performances.
The film will be introduced by Ute Wölfel who teaches and researches German film and literature at the University of Reading. Her fascination with this particular story has lead to several publications on the subject.
She has published widely on German film and literature and (co-)edited several volumes. Her particular field of expertise are East German Cinema and German War Cinema. Among her publications are the edited volume Remembering the German Democratic Republic (Palgrave 2011), and articles on East German Cinema such as Between the Lines: Konrad Wolfs Mama, ich lebe and the Dilemmas of Betrayal and Children of the Revolution: Fathers and Sons in Antifascist DEFA Films. Her latest articles are on Common Traitors in West German War Films of the 1950s and The Grimms Fairy Tales and the TV-Production of a New Germany (2015). She currently also holds a British Academy grant for a project on Children in Texts and Films about WWII.
A feast of German meats, pickles and cheeses plus a glass of wine+ a film ticket for just £14.
