An evening of films which offer an unusual insight in to the dark and funny world of the Nordic countries.
Iceland /Germany, 2013, 81 mins. Dir Benedict Erlingsson
For those who live amid Iceland’s wilderness, horses are more than mere animals. The Icelandic Horse is a unique breed and Icelanders feel an extraordinary affinity for this animal that survives in such harsh environments. Benedict Erlingssons debut is a darkly funny, inventive and very distinctive film, set in a quirky horse-riding community in stunning rural Iceland.
Through a series of intertwining vignettes Of Horses and Men depicts the struggles, romances and jealousies of this small and very horsey Icelandic hamlet, inflected with a dark humor of death, sexual desire, and the eternal battle between man and nature.
A hugely enjoyable film from the wild side of the wild side. It comes with an excellent musical score by David Thor Jonsson and it really resembles nothing else around… deserves its cult status
THE GUARDIAN
Norway, 2014, 116mins. Dir. Hans Petter Moland
Norway, winter. Introverted and hard-working Nils drives the powerful snow plough that keeps open the roads and mountain passes of the inhospitable frozen landscape. Hes just been named citizen of the year for his efforts when he receives news that his son has died of a heroin overdose. Refusing to believe the official version of his sons death, he begins a covert search for the boys alleged murderers. A surprising turn of events causes him to become a tough-as- nails and a feared underworld hero one whose identity nobody knows.
A bruisingly black comic thriller

There are nods to the Coens and Tarantino as the bodies pile up in this Norwegian tale of retribution
