Intimations is a group exhibition that considers intimation as a way of working, thinking and making wherein affinities grow and conjoin across visual, material or thematic differences.

When we first encounter an artwork, what is it that draws us in or strikes a chord? Is there a hint, a subtle sign or inkling, that we understand something without anything being clearly stated, and which we might struggle even to put into words? What do we glean from an arrangement of image, colour or material; what echoes or resonates, and what impressions and ideas begin to form?

Intimations asks how visual, material or conceptual ambiguity might describe our encounters with art and the world. It teases out unexpected kinships across the work of eight artists working in painting, sculpture and photography, whose practices move between figuration and abstraction, idea and image.

A publication accompanying the exhibition – including two new commissioned essays by writers Claire-Louise Bennett and Polly Barton – will launch at a special event on 30 January 2027.

Intimations is co-curated by writer and academic Lizzie Lloyd and Phoenix Gallery curator Matt Burrows
